Based on a true story 'American Gangster' takes us on another gangster style journey, but made refreshing as not based around the Mob or Italian stereotypes. As other reviewers here have noted, this film stands out by the great performances of both Washington and Crowe and they both add depth and flair to their respective roles. I was hooked in the first ten minutes and although Washington plays a flawed character, you can't help but like him. Excellently directed and with great supporting actors as well, this film managed to hold my attention for the duration. If you like crime and gangster films then this rates pretty highly and is well worth a look and even if you're not a fan of these films this has enough on offer to appeal to everyone else as well. A solid four star film.

As a recent film, you might expect that Ridley Scott's feature about Harlem crime boss Frank Lucas would look and sound great on HD and this release does not disappoint at all with a crystal clear 1:85:1 picture and excellent audio. As an added bonus the BD contains both the theatrical and extended versions of the film. The extras are also top notch and include director's commentary, deleted and alternate scenes, several features, music videos etc and the ability to view PIP (picture in picture) features while the movie is playing.
Languages present are English, French, Italian, German, Spanish & Japanese (with 8 additional language subtitles). There is no Region 'B' coding marked on the sleeve or disc so it could be region free. Highly recommended BD viewing and one that makes the DVD versions redundant.
Audio track in Castilian Spanish too December 12, 2008

Just to inform, this Blu Ray has too the audio track in Castilian SPANISH (spain). And you can see too all the extras with subtitles in spanish.
This film has fantastic extras, and the movie itself is fantastic.

I watched American Gangster for the first time on Sky the other day and have to say it is a great film and a pleasure to watch. I've just ordered the blu ray.
It's a slow burner and not the most action packed, but that isn't always a bad thing as this film proves. Based on the true story of Frank Lucas and his rise to power and Richie Roberts and his relentless quest to bring Lucas to justice.
The acting is great as you would expect from such a cast and New York and New Jersey look great going back to the 70's.
There is some great books and documentaries on Frank Lucas and Nicky Barnes (this guy should have film about his life also) so check them out.
All in all a 5 star film.
