4 out of 5 stars No real plot, but boy does it make up for it with action!,   February 8, 2008

To be honest, for the first 10 minutes of this film, you will probably be laughing at the ridiculousness. You are catapulted straight into the action without any introduction of characters, plot or surroundings. This film is violent, sure, but as I always say, it's how a movie is done that makes the difference. Shoot 'Em Up proceeds from one dazzlingly outrageous scene to another with unflagging confidence, tons of panache, brilliantly warped humor and blazing originality, sweeping you and many viewers along.

The casting is genius as well, beginning with Clive Owen, who's dead-on here, with his ever-present carrot in hand, rescuing the (adorable) baby, getting the girl, killing the bad guys (who just keep coming like deranged vampire replicants), even solving The Mystery from the most obscure of clues, all while complaining about everything he hates.

And speaking of the great Paul Giamatti, he's in monumentally fine form here as Hertz, the self-described brilliant leader of the gunmen. Squallid and seedy beyond all comprehension, you just know he's having a blast (pun intended) with this part. After proving in his last few outings that he can carry a film and play anything, he gets to bask hardily in full venal mode, sneering, scowling and torturing his way into our hearts as only Giamatti can.

The film is shot in stark, sharp tones, making it look like a comic book come to life more than any film I've ever seen, while still using real actors. And there are sequences here that you have NOT witnessed before, speaking of that originality I mentioned earlier. The one which stood out most to me is the one where Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci (also perfect) are making love and the baddies bust in. In most films, this would pre-empt the love-making. In Shoot 'Em Up, they continue the act, which actually culminates while the bullets are flying. Worked for me.

1 out of 5 stars I hate stupid movies......!!!!!!!   January 24, 2008

But what I hate most is wasting time watching these stupid movies! This movie is so far fetch that it's absurd... it's also frustrating to have such a good talented actor as Clive Owen trying to work with such an awful and ridiculous script... but a good movie for Paul Giamatti... right up his ally as he hardly has no talent! Normally I would stay away if he is part of the cast, but I thought I would give it a shot because I never thought Clive Owen would go for a bad script... bad mistake... huge mistake I will try to never do again. STAY AWAY FROM THIS MOVIE... it's crap of all crap... enough said, I already wasted too much time for this dreadful piece of garbage!

2 out of 5 stars "Well, well, well, this is a fine mess!"   January 16, 2008

A down-and-out ex-assassin, Smith, tries to save a heavily pregnant woman from other assassins. During an early, farcical gun battle, ex-assassin Smith helps this mother to give birth, while fending off the "bad guys" with an array of killer carrots. The mother is killed, but the baby survives. Then, Smith proceeds to protect this orphaned child at all costs. Smith takes the child to a prostitute/wet nurse, and thus begins many more farcical gun battles.
To say that I did not enjoy this movie is a gross understatement. To say that I loathed, detested, even abhorred, this film would be a little closer to the mark. I am usually a reasonably good judge of what movies I will and will not like, by viewing the trailer. So, after watching the film, I was pretty disgusted with the way it was being advertised. The screen promotion for this film gives you fleeting glances of some high-octane, action sequences. You will also see, in the film's advertisement, Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci, and Paul Giamatti looking ultra-chi-chi and uttering snappy one-liners. Therefore I was eagerly anticipating the film's release, as I enjoy watching the occasional movie that is completely unpretentious. Movies, whose sole purpose is to entertain the viewer, can be a worthwhile antidote for a miserable day. However, Shoot `Em Up's content is not what it says on the tin. In fact, from the outset, Shoot `Em Up stretches the boundaries of bad taste. The vile content includes breast-feeding fetishists, as well as a corrupt senator who is harvesting babies, in order to receive a bone marrow transplant. At no point did I find any of the action sequences even remotely amusing. In fact, I sat through the movie in a permanent and inexorable state of disgust.
Now, some would say that I should have known what the movie was like, and because I do not like this sort of film, I should not have bothered watching it. But, I would argue that the advertisement gave no indication of the baseness of the movie's theme. Others may argue still, that this movie is based on the Garth Ennis comic books, and that I should have known what I was in for. But, for those of you who have matured past adolescence, and no longer see the humour in a cheesy and salacious graphic novel, be aware that the trailer for this movie is essentially misleading.
I feel that I have been slightly preachy in this review, so I am going to soften up a bit and give this film a few tiny bits of praise (probably a lot more than it deserves). If you like your movies to have nonstop action sequences, then Shoot `Em Up supplies these in abundance. Whether or not you appreciate the humour of these set pieces is entirely up to your discretion. The film also pays homage/rips-off some of the truly action flicks. Michael Davis, the director, lets us glimpse the quirky humour of Raising Arizona, and takes the cheesiness of action movie one-liners to another level.
I have no doubt that there are some of you out there who will revel in Shoot 'Em Up's licentious and absurd premise. But, unfortunately for me, the film was not my cup of tea. So, if some guy "feeling up" a recently deceased woman is your idea of a laugh, then this is the movie for you. But, if not, then avoid this film at all costs!

4 out of 5 stars Mindlessly memorable   December 10, 2007
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Whoah! If you're looking for mindless action, THIS is the movie for you.
It's over the top, totally unbelievable, physically impossible, but absolutely brilliant all at the same time.

2 minute version:

Clive Owen eats a lot of carrots, and values his privacy. There are many things that he absolutely hates, and he comes into contact with most of these things when he unwillingly gets involved in a plot to kill a very pregnant young woman. Suddenly faced with a nanny job, he shoots his way out of the frying pan and into the fire, each scenario more draw-dropping-ly impossible than the last. Paul Giamatti plays an unlikely criminal mastermind and Monica Bellucci is under-utilized as the proverbial professional with a heart of gold except she's also got a chest of milk to go with it. Things get political, and hopelessly complicated, and of course there's lots and lots (and lots) of shooting, during any (and I do mean ANY) situation.

Good stuff:

1. Clive Owen
2. Clive Owen's one-liners
3. Clive Owen's stunts
4. The hilariously bad but breathtaking, yet impossible scenarios
5. Paul Giamatti's cell phone calls
6. The body count
7. Clive Owen's nude scene
8. Clive Owen

Bad stuff:

1. Carrots are DEFINITELY not good for some people
2. Not enough Bellucci
3. Plot (nuff said) but then again, we don't need no steenkin' plot

If you can forget that this movie professes to have a plot, you're in for a rollicking good (but extremely violent) time. Definitely a must-see if you're looking for mindless adult entertainment, and don't mind looking at Clive Owen.

Rated: 4.5 stars
