3 out of 5 stars Not Enough Light   July 13, 2008

After a plague kills most of humanity, a lone survivor in New York City (Robert Neville, played by Will Smith) struggles to find a cure, while battling the zombie-like deformed creatures which have become of some survivors and who feed on the non-infected. The story is obviously heavily inspired by Stephen King's the Stand.

This is one of those films which is designed to be seen once, and on the big screen. On the small screen one feels that something has been missed, but it can still be quite enjoyable for those people who enjoy this sort of story. I cannot compare it to the novel as I have not read it, but the film adaptation of the story at least is somewhat slight, and in fact I suspected that it had been based on a short story due to its lack of plot. The scriptwriting is good, the directing is solid, and the background music is brilliant throughout (in fact it's the probably the best soundtrack album out there right now.) Smith is always likeable, if not loveable, due to his willingness to show his vulnerability. He gave a strong acting effort, but I can't say that it's of the same calibre as his performance in Ali. The pacing is typical for a Hollywood movie these days; an odd mix of spot-on and clumsy (partly due to speeding up and then slowing down, much like a rollercoaster ride (but not everyone enjoys that sort of deliberate and rather mechanical pacing.) Animated ghouls just can't match the realistic appearance of the made-up actors. It's also a rather slow and sombre film, which builds up to very touching moments which make the wait feel somewhat worthwhile.

I would say this is a good film (above average), but I would not go so far as to say that it's a gem or anything. It does have an important message ("Light the dark"), but I can't help but feel that a 30-minute short film could have done this more effectively. Technically very well made, but I feel that Smith was held back a bit by the director, otherwise he could have added many more impulsive nuances to his performance (which he's certainly capable of.) The film comes out looking very well designed and polished, but missing story depth and character exploration.

Still, some people will love this film and most others should still enjoy the experience.

Wow. My expectations for this latest Will Smith vehicle were not high but I figured that it would have decent enough production values to be a suitable test disc for my new PS3. Well, if you only want a shiny test pattern to make sure your projector is working and make sure to plug your ears and most importantly turn it off after a minute or two, hey go nuts.

Actually watching this film however will present you with one of the single worst flicks I have seen in a while though I guess there is some amusement value to be had watching an apparently inept director throw away over a hundred million dollars on terrible CGI, pathetic writing and a two minute remake of Judas Priest's "Hot Rockin" video starting Will Smith. If you actually want to see a movie that is even remotely entertaining however, stay far far away. This is a total desecration of the original Vincent Price classic and the born again Christian propaganda piece tacked on the end is just the final flip of the bird to anyone foolish enough not to have turned the movie off already.

Either the other positive reviewer saw a different movie than I did or Amazon's astroturfing prevention ain't so hot.

Blech.

Originally I went to this movie simply because it was a Will Smith flick.I knew very little of what I was about to see...so I sat there and was glued to the movie screen. This amazing story of a man living on his own, trying to survive a life of solitude, trying to stay alive from the "infected". When the movie was over I was curious as to what all he had done over the previous 3 years...what kind of thoughts went through his head?Did he ever just want to give up on life? How did he cope with being alone all the time, with no social interaction with other human beings?I mean, sure he talked to his dog Sam, and the mannequins, but that was obviously out of desperation to talk to someone.... I enjoyed this movie so much I went and watched it again. That wasn't enough so I bought the book, which is fairly different in areas, but the main idea of a man being alone for so long is still there. What a incredible story. What a great movie. I cannot wait for this to come out on DVD.
