From Amazon.com Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes places over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you subtract the commercials). Everything takes place in real time, which means no flashbacks, no flash-forwards, no handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked so things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy. Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done an impressive job of putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as federal agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) runs around L.A. trying to stall an assassination attempt on an African American presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan baddies. Twists, turns, revelations, and cliffhangers are tossed at us with satisfying regularity. It's not perfect: we get some hokey plot devices (instant amnesia, anybody?); the final twist makes no sense whatsoever; there are altogether too many huggy family moments; and as for Dennis Hopper's "Serbian" accent.... Even so, this is undeniably mold-breaking TV. Sutherland, rescuing his career from the doldrums in one heroic leap, fully deserves his Golden Globe. Sets and locations are artfully deployed, and Sean Callery's score is a powerful, brooding presence. Like Murder One and The Sopranos, 24 is one of those series that future TV thrillers will be measured against. --Philip Kemp

You gotta start somewhere August 29, 2007 In retrospect, this season of 24 is one of the weaker ones. It gets its due credit for being the first however. You can see how the show is still playing with some of the ideas that the writers had whirling around (the intro sequence even changes after a couple of episodes).
The story is a little over the top, but as later seasons of 24 prove...that's to be expected with this series. Characters come and go, there are surprise twists and turns, traitors/double agents etc. Anyone looking for a TV serial action-drama with the feel of a hollywood blockbuster should check out 24.
**If you're looking for a more realistic take on the spy/intelligence community check out the BBC series "MI-5" aka "Spooks" in the UK.**

This show is just amazing. I started watching at the start of season 3. After about two episodes. I rushed out to buy the first season, and I wasn't disappointed. If you want to start watching 24 BUY THIS DVD FIRST. You won't regret it.
Too many expendables March 21, 2005 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
The writers just went overboard on the twists and turns of this series. Maybe it work its popularity mainly from viewers seeing a segment every other week. But it is dissapointing when you watch it continuously in its dvd format and the villains are thrown all over the place. For the writers to continually revealing traitors,is very annoying. The biggest boo boo is the last one revealed.
Amazing thriller February 20, 2005 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I was glued to my TV set from DVD #1 to DVD #6. Non-stop, interesting and riveting plot. The best drama series I have ever seen. Great cast too.
dodgy filming January 18, 2005 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Great show, some questionable plots and twists. Am I the only one who noticed on at least 2 occasions film crew members accidently being in the shot? When Teri and Kim are waiting to be picked up by chopper next to the lake at Gains's compound watch the left of the screen and see the guy sitting next to the lake.
