entertaining, but not all it could have been December 15, 2008

Being one of those who likes Will Smith (in fact, I'm not sure I've ever come across anybody who doesn't like the man), I was looking forward to this movie. I loved the premise, the trailer looked great, and I felt it had huge promise. It sounded really funny.
It doesn't quite live up to it. Smith's dark humour really works, the action sequences are well done and the film does get laughs, but I can't help feeling that somewhere after the first half the film makers copped out. The laughs stop coming as fast, and as Charlize Theron's character gets more involved things start to lose interest. Explanations of who Hancock is and his limitations are allowed little time (surprising given the meal they make of the build up), they're extremely flimsy and could do with greater detail/being a bit more thought out. The difference in powers between them begs a question of whether or not they can do the same things, and as far as plot devices there's a really clumsy one. I can't detail it lest I spoil somebody, but all in all I was unimpressed by it all (being an SF/fantasy fan, I tend to get picky about my origin stories and logic flaws in such things!).
I make it sound terrible, and it's not. It's entertaining, there are some good gags, and it's got more to it than some of the blockbusters of 2008. I like that it tried to take a more original twist on the superhero genre, I like a bit of black humour and this movie will entertain you. I will happily watch it more than once and I will still be laughing when that whale hits the boat. Still, I think it could have been even better.
Will Smith still rules though. If ever I was to lay claim to an action guy, it'd be be him.

WIll smith has done it again blending humour and a love story to a T! The storys simple, the plot isnt that hard to follow and i can see why people are giving it low reviews but i reckon there over egging it.
ITs a challenging take an an all powerful super hero, blending historical myth, modern cultures and a few mishaps to create a film that makes you feel good about humanity for once.
Will Smith has a knack for picking good scripts and playing them off effortlessly his acting talents give hancock loveability.
Its not the best blockbuster of the year but if your with your family, find yourself with a couple of hours free, or just want an in offensive film then you wont be disappointed with Hancock!

The Good:
The opening half hour, in which Hancock's combination of superhuman
physical powers and all-too-human psychological flaws are exploited by
Smith to blackly humorous effect.
The Bad
The rest of the movie. After an intriguing opening in which the good
folk of LA turn against the superhuman liability in their midst this
turns into a predictable action movie, full of loud explosions and empty
emotions.
The Ugly
Just like Smith's previous outing, I am Legend, the promise of the opening act is undermined by a second half in which the film makers lose their nerveand provide what they think of as an audience friendly action flick. Will Smith has an engaging screen presence but I can't help feeling he's selling himself (and the audience) short with these sorts of movies.

Inventive and watchable, without ever really satisfying, Hancock is nearly a good film... yet never quite delivers despite its promising premise and quality cast. I was checking it out to see whether it was suitable to watch with a youth group and was very suprised to hear a whole host of expletives, including the f-word, in a 12-cert film.

After I Am Legend (disappointing), I was hoping for a good Will Smith film. Unfortunately, I didn't get my wish. I like superhero movies, generally, but Hancock is mediocre.
John Hancock is a depressed alcoholic superhero. He's still doing his job, but in the process of saving lives he's also costing Los Angeles millions of dollars in repairs. For this reason, the public do not like him and are getting to the stage where they wish he'd leave and go 'save' another city. Things change, though, when Hancock saves the life of super-duper PR guy Ray Embrey. Realising that Hancock is a good guy underneath it all, he decides to help him by changing his image and have the public love him once more.
However, things aren't quite that clear cut. From their first meeting, it's obvious that Ray's wife Mary hates Hancock. She tries to talk her husband out of helping him, emphasising that he's a lost cause and isn't worth the trouble. It soon becomes clear, though, that Mary has good reason to want to keep her distance from John Hancock...
This film did nothing for me. There were a few half-hearted laughs, but I thought the characters were flat throughout, and even the 'twist' in the tale came in too late. By that point, I was just hoping there wasn't much more left to watch. There was nothing clever or exciting about Hancock, it was just silly. Even if you're heavily into superhero films and Will Smith - I still wouldn't bother.
